Research suggests that periodontal disease could increase one’s risk for developing cancer. A study published in The Lancet Oncology Journal in June of 2008 concluded that men with a history of gum disease had a 14 percent higher risk of developing cancer than those who did not have the disease. Inflammation as a result periodontal disease may be the cause. Evidence suggests that chronic inflammation leads to an increased cancer risk.
